Course Description:

This webinar is an in-depth exploration of the short and long-term impact of child sexual abuse (CSA) on an individual's psychological, emotional, and relational development. Presenters will provide therapists and play therapists with a comprehensive understanding of how CSA trauma manifests throughout different life stages, from childhood to adulthood. Participants will gain insights into the neurobiological, cognitive, and emotional effects of CSA, as well as evidence-based therapeutic interventions to support survivors in their healing journey regardless of age. The seminar will also cover topics such as attachment disruptions, identity formation,

relationship challenges, and the role of play therapy in processing trauma across the lifespan.
 

Objectives:

1. Examine Understand how CSA affects individuals in and beyond childhood, influencing emotional, cognitive, and social development.

2. Explore how CSA alters brain development and contributes to long-term mental health challenges.

3. Recognize symptoms of PTSD, dissociation, and other trauma-related disorders stemming from CSA.

4. Assess how CSA affects attachment styles, trust, and interpersonal relationships throughout life.

5. Address the impact of CSA on self-esteem, self-worth, and identity formation in survivors.

6. Adapt play therapy techniques to support older clients and adults processing CSA trauma.

7. Differentiate between typical developmental struggles and those caused by CSA trauma.

8. Develop trauma-informed therapeutic approaches for survivors of CSA at different life stages.

9. Address challenges related to sexual health, intimacy, and boundaries in adult survivors.

10. Examine how CSA trauma can influence parenting and family dynamics across generations.

11. Promote resilience and post-traumatic growth helping survivors develop coping strategies to foster healing and resilience.

12. Enhance therapist self-awareness and countertransference management when working with CSA survivors.

13. Describe the unique therapeutic needs of survivors experiencing complex trauma and dissociation.

14. Review best practices for confidentiality, mandated reporting, and ethical concerns when working with adult CSA survivors.

15. Integrate Multicultural and Inclusive Approaches that respect cultural, gender, and identity differences among CSA survivors.

Dr. Shani Verschleiser, AuD, LCSW, is a trauma therapist, noted author, and speaker devoted to advancing family and child safety. Dr. Shani founded MagenU.org, through which she has educated tens of thousands of individuals on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) prevention.

Dr. Shani Verschleiser is trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing (SE), EMDR, Breath Work, Brain Spotting and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP). Continuously pursuing knowledge in the field, Shani remains at the forefront of trauma-focused care and child protection, embodying a commitment to making a lasting impact on the well-being of individuals and families.

 

Vanessa Kellner, LCPC, NCC, RPT-S, CCPT is the owner of Wholesome Healing, a private practice specializing in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), located in Severna Park, MD. She is an author, play therapist and play therapy supervisor, credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) through APT, and certified as a Child-Centered Play Therapist (CCPT) through both the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement (NIRE) and the University of North Texas Center for Play Therapy (UNT).

Vanessa has over 10 years in the field of counseling. She has co-authored a book chapter on how supervisors can recognize and address compassion fatigue in play therapists. She is also a registered yoga teacher, bringing her expertise and experience in yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness to her clinical work.

She is passionate about her roles as a play therapist, supervisor, and practice owner, but most importantly in her role as a mom of 3.
