Meet your Remarkable Women of Central New York
Mullens’ impact goes beyond helping children heal. Outside of her business in the Port City, she teaches graduate students at Suny Oswego, has authored and edited seven books in her field, and advises other play therapists around the world. Her own strength especially shines through in her personal life as a mother, wife, and community volunteer.
“I set a high bar for the people that I’m connected to but I do that for myself as well so I still know that there’s a lot to learn I can be a better professor, I could be a better mom for sure I could be a better counselor and I really hold myself to how can I do that,” Mullen explains...

Play Therapy Activities for Boosting Self-Esteem in Children
Jodi Mullen, PhD, a mental health counselor and play therapist in Oswego, New York, believes play therapy works, in part, because it focuses on what’s right with a child instead of what’s wrong.
“In play therapy, children are accepted unconditionally and not corrected,” she says. “Trained play therapists honor the child’s perspective, and therefore children learn that they are enough exactly as they are.”
While play therapy is generally used with children between ages 3 to 12, it can also be an effective tool for teens and adults, Mullen says...

Rekindling Romance at 55-Plus
To get the communication going, Jodi Mullen, Ph.D., at Integrative Counseling Services, PLLC in Oswego, recommends doing something together, whether it’s playing cards or cooking together like you used to or trying something mutually new together.
“Make doing something with your partner part of your routine,” Mullen said. “We’ll go out for a walk at least once a week, but don’t make it, ‘Oh, I have to do that walk with my partner.’ It’s very easy to get lost in your own endeavors. Make sure you have opportunities to...

Faith During COVID-19 Isolation
“During this period, it’s helpful,” said Jodi Ann Mullen, Ph.D., a licensed mental health counselor and a professor at SUNY Oswego in the counseling and psychological services department. “It’s not just connecting to the others but to the community. That may be the more important connection. And knowing we’re all connected by our faith. That is especially important right now — to feel connected to others, community and faith. There’s a lot of ambiguity to what our..."

Health professionals offer tips for dealing with stress of a COVID-19 holiday season
Pressures related to the holidays this year are being compounded by the pandemic. “It is safe to assume that anxiety may increase during the holiday season when routines change, and there are pressures related to finances and family,” said Integrative Counseling Services Director Jodi Mullen, Ph.D. “General Anxiety Disorder is one of the most common mental health disorders and the most prevalent of all the anxiety disorders.” Dr. Mullen told The Palladium-Times in an email that Integrative Counseling Services, located at 5 W. Cayuga St., Oswego, generally receives more referrals toward the end of the year. This year, there could be a rise in diagnosed GAD, she said. “Typically, we experience a surge in referrals for...
