Course Description:

Play therapists and child counselors can experience a range of challenges in their clinical work, from uncertainty about play therapy skills and case conceptualization to difficulty managing challenging clinical situations, therapeutic relationships, and their own responses to the work. Supervisors play an important role in helping clinicians work through these challenges while continuing to develop their skills and clinical confidence.

In this training, participants will explore common challenges that arise in play therapy and child counseling and consider how supervisors can recognize when a supervisee is struggling, provide appropriate support, and help guide clinical growth. Attention will be given to clinical decision-making, identifying areas for additional development, addressing concerns within supervision, and using supervision to strengthen play therapy practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common clinical challenges that may arise for play therapists and child counselors and recognize signs that additional supervision or support may be needed.

  • Describe strategies supervisors can use to address challenges in play therapy, including supporting clinical decision-making, skill development, and the therapeutic relationship.

  • Apply supervision strategies to help play therapists and child counselors work through clinical challenges while strengthening competence, confidence, and professional growth.
