Description:
Working with trauma in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) can be both powerful and challenging. When children come to the playroom carrying deep emotional wounds, their healing may unfold slowly, symbolically, and sometimes in ways that are hard to understand. As clinicians, how do we stay grounded in the non-directive model while navigating the intensity and ambiguity that trauma can bring to the play?
This webinar is designed to support play therapists who are using non-directive approaches with children impacted by trauma. Participants will explore how trauma may show up in the playroom, how to manage their own emotional responses, and how to hold space for the child’s process—especially when it’s slow, repetitive, or emotionally charged. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of the therapeutic relationship, recognizing trauma themes in symbolic play, and using self-awareness and reflection to remain present and confident in the work.
Objectives:
1. Describe how trauma may be expressed symbolically in non-directive play therapy sessions.
2. Identify common emotional and clinical challenges therapists experience when working with trauma using CCPT.
3. Recognize the importance of therapist presence and trust in the child’s innate capacity for healing.
