Description:
Children bring their cultural identities, family relationships, community experiences, and unique ways of understanding the world into their play. When play therapy takes place in schools, practitioners must also consider the cultural values, expectations, and institutional practices that shape children’s daily experiences.
In this interactive two-hour webinar, presenters from the United States and Nigeria will explore culturally thoughtful approaches to play therapy in school settings. Grounded in cultural humility, relational connection, and respect for the child’s lived experience, participants will consider how culture influences play, communication, help-seeking, and the therapeutic relationship. Through cross-cultural perspectives and clinical reflection, participants will identify ways to strengthen culturally responsive practice while honoring each child’s individuality, family, and community context.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Identify at least three cultural, familial, community, or school-contextual factors that may influence children’s play, communication, and engagement in school-based play therapy.
2. Analyze how personal assumptions, cultural values, and institutional expectations may influence a practitioner’s interpretation of children’s play and therapeutic needs.
3. Apply at least two culturally thoughtful strategies to support relational connection, cultural humility, and responsiveness in school-based play therapy.
4. Describe two considerations for collaborating with families, educators, and school communities while respecting cultural differences and the child’s individual needs.
