Description:
Mental health and educational professionals who work with children can significantly benefit from training in play therapy. The most basic skills in play therapy can improve rapport and subsequently relationships with children (professional AND personal). In this workshop, participants will learn basic play therapy skills through role-plays and practice exercises to engage children in play therapy. Developmental and cultural issues relevant to this population will be addressed, and many practical issues will be demonstrated.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify three ways to use play therapy with children
- Replicate play therapy techniques suitable for children
- Use beginning play therapy skills to address the developmental and emotional needs of children
- Accurately identify feelings in children
- Explain the culture of childhood as it relates to Play Therapy
- Describe the play therapy approach with children.
- Describe the child-centered play therapy process and have first-hand experience through authentic learning and practice
- Identify key themes that may present themselves in a child's play and understand their significance
- Develop strategies for approaching common play therapy issues
- Describe how and why limits are set in play therapy
- Create a foundation for utilizing limit setting in clinical practice of play therapy
- List what toys are appropriate in the therapeutic playroom.
About the presenter:
Dr. Jodi Mullen is a professor at SUNY Oswego in the Counseling & Psychological Services Department. She primarily teaches in the Mental Health Counseling Program. She is the director of Integrative Counseling Services, with several offices in Central New York. Dr. Mullen is an international speaker, author, credentialed play therapist and play therapy supervisor. Dr. Mullen has over 25 years in the field of counseling. She has authored books on play therapy, counseling children and adolescents, supervision, grief counseling and parenting. Dr. Mullen was the 2008 recipient of the Key Award for Professional Training & Education through the Association for Play Therapy. She is the proud Momma of Leah & Andrew.

Workshop registrations are subject to the following refund schedule:
- Cancellations made 10 or more Business days before the scheduled workshop date are fully refundable minus a 5% transaction fee.
- Cancellations made less than 10 Business days before the workshop are eligible for a 50% refund.
- Less than 24-hour notice Cancellations, Same-day cancellations and no-shows are not eligible for a refund. Failure to attend the workshop for any reason does not automatically qualify for a refund.
